Pest Treatments, Pets and Children
Pest control can be done safely around families. Knowing what to ask and how to prepare keeps everyone protected.
Request pest controlAsk about products
Ask what products will be used and what the label says about re-entry times.
Prepare the home
Put away toys, pet bowls and food before treatment.
Pets
Keep pets out of treated areas until they're dry. Cover fish tanks and turn off pumps.
Children
Keep children away from treated areas and baits.
Yards
Keep children and pets off treated lawns until the label allows.
Baits
Bait stations should be placed out of reach.
If something is swallowed
Contact Poison Control or your vet, and have the product name ready.
Choosing methods
Ask whether baits, traps or targeted crack-and-crevice treatments can be used instead of broad sprays, especially indoors where children play on the floor.
Allergies and asthma
If someone in the house has asthma or chemical sensitivities, tell the company before the visit so they can adjust products and timing.
Gardens and food
Ask before treating near vegetable beds or fruit trees, and keep outdoor eating areas clear during treatment.
Keep labels
If you use any products yourself, keep them in their original containers, locked away from children and pets.
Fish and birds
Fish tanks and pet birds are sensitive to airborne products. Cover tanks, turn off pumps and move birds to another room during indoor treatments.
Plan the timing
Schedule indoor treatments when children are at school or out for the day, and air rooms afterwards if the label says to.
Ask questions
A licensed company should be happy to explain products and precautions. If something isn't clear, ask before the work starts.
